Haji Mike aka Mike Hajimichael

Dub Poet – Radio Presenter – DJ – Writer – Doctor of Philosophy

Born in Marathovouno, Cyprus, and rasied in London, England, Haji Mike is one of the most well known artist in the far eastern Mediterannean island. He’s been on the BBC (Rhythms Of The World TV Programme, and Andy Kershaw live radio sessions) and has graced many radio stations. Lyrically he has appeared on many  artists creations not only on dub, but hip hop, acid funk, dance and world music. He’s toured extensively throughout the world in South Africa, Japan, UK, Jamaica,  Greece, USA, Ireland, France, Portugal and his homeland, Cyprus. Currently he DJ’s on 3 stations weekly including Nice Up Radio, Riddim 1 Radio & Feel It Radio.

Haji Mike is also an Associate Professor Head of The Department of Communications at The University of Nicosia, and has lectured at conferences throughout the world. He recently completed the book ‘Bob Marley and Media Representation and Audiences’ (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023) and presented it in Jamaica at the University of West Indies. One of the latest music collaboration projects featuring Haji Mike is called ‘Sharka’ by Chaka Chouka, an online collaboration with Simon Webster, Bernard O’neill, and Mouna Eddrou, a scintillating mix of reggae, Moroccan music and funk. Sharka has lyrics in four different languages and Haji’s socially engaged dub poetry lyrics are complimented perfectly by Mouna’s Sufi inspired singing. Morocco is a cultural crossroads where North African Berber culture meets the Middle East, the Sahara, sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. Chaka Chouka’s music is a reflection of this and also links seamlessly with the African roots, traditional “mento” music and jazz/ R n B influences of reggae.

„My music is about taking the time to look ourselves in the face…in the mirror. African riddims are part of my compositions and blood. Everything in the sound of THE MIRROR is funk fusion born from moving basslines, tense like rubber chords and from the disco-dub atmosphere of the Nigerian rhythm sections like Africa 70. Several years ago, a friend came to record with Tony Allen. He regularly passed by my place in Paris and with time I understood what makes his drumming so natural, that it supports the whole song with its systematic bass drum and very dub grooves. This is something I tried to introduce in THE MIRROR compositions, but also remixes like Negru Voda from Lil Obeah & Marius Costache.”

THE MIRROR

„Big respect to THE MIRROR who took the Negru Voda darkness industrial dub into afrobeat well deserved territory! Peace and blessings from Transylvania to Vilnius!”

The MIRROR aka Boris K is a composer, director, producer, bass player & music lover. He is constantly working with artists within the European sound system world, whether with the Reunionese Nathalie Natiembé or the Englishwoman of Indian origin Susheela Raman, but also with Yann Clery, Victor Diawara part of Afrodelic, Emel Mathlouthi or Sam Karpienia. THE MIRROR is an invitation for all to travel through music.

With music always in motion, The MIRROR propels us towards the future in a whirlwind of emotions, a music without borders nourished by Electro, Afrobeat, Hip Hop and Jazz; a music

enriched by encounters with eclectic artists. The MIRROR project questions identity or rather identities as Boris is the French son of an immigrant, steeped in multiple cultures, part of all the foods and contradictions. THE MIRROR music is a painting of time passing, which reinforces the artists humanity. THE MIRROR collaborates with the Amsterdam-based poet BLESZ and different other artists and confronts his memory of sounds with their universe of words as a face to face interaction with unique results.

For many years, Boris was with Sir Jean and drummer Germain Samba, the linchpin of the Lyonnais Afrobeat group Meï Teï Shô, a group that over the course of four albums travelled all around the planet, from Brazil to Egypt touring.

„Bauhaus with Bela Lugosi’s Dead have started properly the fusion of postpunk and dub. I can’t shake it out of my mind how raw and energetic they looked and sounded in the film The Hunger! They are gods here in Transylvania and we took it seriously with producer Petru Birladeanu when creating the version as the PostPunk Dubby Party theme song!”

XQUI is an anonymous outsider electronic musician from Manchester, releasing music on the Wormhole World label. The artist first appeared in April 2018 with his Britannia EP, which was swiftly followed by the Dragon album in May. Using field recordings which he manipulated via mobile phone and laptop, he created incredible soundscapes and was quickly compared to Brian Eno, William Basinski and Clint Mansell.

Appearing in several Albums of the Year lists over the last three years, he has also remixed and worked with numerous artists the likes of Mark Stewart, Vince Clarke, Blancmage and Neil Arthur. XQUI is a sonic time traveler and on the Twenties album he went back one hundred years, navigating a twisted channel to the roaring Twenties. The album was labeled uncompromisingly immersive; startling; melancholic; confusing; beautiful – the rebirth of a fading spirit song of ages. XQUI and Lil Obeah are labelmates on Wormhole World and often collaborate and soundclash to creative results.
